Four mechanisms decide whether you are cited

Training data weight. The model absorbed a snapshot of the web. If your brand was thin or absent in that snapshot, the model has no prior on you. You cannot patch this directly. You can only make the next snapshot better.

Retrieval. Most engines now fetch live pages at question time. This is the layer you can move fastest. A page that is crawlable, answer-first and current can be retrieved today and cited today.

Authority heuristics. This is where the 0.664 lives. The model is looking for corroboration: does the open web agree with what this brand says about itself? Your own claims have a ceiling. Third parties raise it.

Freshness. A page that has not moved in two years is a page the model quietly discounts. We spend Issue #17 on this.

That is the honest summary of all four mechanisms. When an engine names you, it is putting its own credibility behind you. It does not make that bet on your backlink profile. It makes it because enough independent sources agree that you are what you say you are.

“The brands it didn’t recommend lost. Not because they weren’t good, but because the AI didn’t trust them enough to stake its credibility on them.”

Take your top three buyer questions. Ask Perplexity each one, then click through to the sources it actually cited.
Count how many are your pages, and how many are somebody else writing about you. That ratio is the article in one number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does AI decide which sources to cite?

Four mechanisms, working together. What the model absorbed in training. What it can retrieve live at question time. Whether independent sources corroborate your claims. And how recently the page moved. Ahrefs measured the corroboration signal at 0.664 correlation with AI Overview visibility, against 0.218 for backlinks. Off-site agreement beats on-site authority.

Does ranking on Google still matter for AI citations?

Yes, as the entry fee. A large share of AI citations come from pages already ranking in Google's top ten, so poor rankings keep you out of the candidate pool entirely. But ranking first does not get you cited. Plenty of number-one results are never quoted, because the answer is buried or nobody else corroborates it.

Why do backlinks matter so little to AI?

Because a link is a vote you can buy, and the models appear to have priced that in. An unlinked mention in a trade publication is harder to manufacture than a link, which is exactly why it carries more signal. Ahrefs put branded mentions at roughly three times the predictive power of backlinks, and the gap held across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews.

Can I make AI cite my page instead of a competitor's?

Not directly, and anyone selling you that is lying. What you can do is make your page the easiest correct answer to extract, and make the open web agree with it. Those are the two levers. Everything else is noise.

Have you run this and measured it?

This newsletter is trying to work out whether AI visibility is a real channel or an expensive story. That gets settled by operators, not vendors. If you have run a programme and have numbers, good or bad, we want the case study. The ones that did not work are worth as much as the ones that did.
