73% of B2B buyers now use AI tools as part of their vendor research process. That number was effectively zero three years ago. The buying journey has moved, and most marketing teams have not moved with it. Eighteen months ago, a B2B buyer researching software started with Google. They typed a keyword, scanned ten blue links, visited three or four websites, and formed a shortlist. The process was visible. It left traces. You could track it. Today's buyer opens an AI tool and asks their question in plain language. They get a direct answer. Named vendors with explanations and comparisons, before visiting a single website. The shortlist forms in that moment. The brands not in that answer are not on the shortlist. By the time the buyer opens a browser, the consideration set is already closed. <33% of all Google searches now result in a click to any website SparkToro · "In 2026, Less than One Third of Google Searches Still Send a Click" SparkToro's 2026 research confirms it: less than one in three Google searches sends a user to an external website, down from nearly half just three years ago. When buyers use Google AI Mode specifically, that number drops to 7%: 93% of AI Mode searches end with no click at all (Semrush, 2025). The traffic channel that funded an entire generation of B2B content marketing is not declining. It has structurally changed. Marketers need to prepare for a future with even fewer organic traffic opportunities." | Rand Fishkin SparkToro · on zero-click search |
The Categories Most ExposedZero-click erosion and AI shortlisting are not evenly distributed across markets. B2B software categories with well-defined buyer questions. "best CRM for a 50-person sales team," "top project management tools for remote teams," "alternatives to [category leader] for a Series A startup", are among the most heavily AI-answered query types. These are exactly the questions your buyers are asking. And they're exactly the questions AI tools answer with named vendor shortlists. 94% of B2B buyers now use LLMs at some point in their purchase journey. Forrester's 2025 research shows that 61% of the buying decision is complete before a buyer ever contacts a vendor. The vendor shortlist is being formed in AI tools, invisibly, before your sales team is ever in the room. Measured across a defined set of 20 target queries, scored by citation frequency and prominence across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Copilot. Most B2B brands have not measured this yet. Which means most marketing leaders are making content and SEO investment decisions without knowing whether their brand appears in the conversations that precede the sales cycle. The measurement gap is as significant as the visibility gap itself. "Zero-click content is content that provides value without requiring a click. It's self-contained, teaches or informs, and makes your brand easier to retrieve, understand, cite, trust, and remember — whether a human or an AI is doing the retrieving." | Amanda Natividad Chief Evangelist, SparkToro · Author, Zero Click Marketing |
